The OWUL is unique in the amateur Overwatch scene. Where most other leagues allow players of any SR to participate, the defining characteristic of the OWUL is separation of teams into divisions based on their Skill Ranking. This is not by accident--our mission is to provide an opportunity for players of all skill levels to find worthy opponents, games that will challenge them and help them improve as a team.
Smurfing--when a player with a higher ranked account also has a lower ranked account, and uses it to play against less skilled players--is both counter to this stated mission and kind of pointless. Using a higher level ringer to DPS carry your team against other teams who believe they’re facing a fair fight carries no benefit other than a false sense of accomplishment. There is no prize money at stake, and you are cheating your team out of fair fights that could genuinely help you improve.
The OWUL Code of Conduct defines smurfing, along with playing on someone else’s account, as cheating. Any player caught smurfing, with evidence judged by the admin team as definitive, will be banned immediately and without recourse. Having multiple battle.net accounts is not smurfing. You, yourself, may only participate as a core roster member of a single OWUL team, no matter how many accounts you have, and you must use your highest ranked account for all SR calculation purposes. This ensures you will be playing against your equals.
Team captains: Make sure you know your players and subs. Knowingly fielding a lower level smurf in a way that gives you an advantage in any OWUL event whatsoever can result in administrative action, ranging from a temporary suspension, forfeit of a match, or having your organization/team banned from the league.
We are wary of banning players irrevocably without proof. While we will investigate reports of smurfing as best we can, there are few forms of proof we can rely upon or access, since we don’t have access to battle.net logs or any of Blizzard’s tools. If you report a suspected smurf we will do our best. Please include any relevant screenshots or other evidence with such a report. Remember that a player being very skilled, even in an unlikely situation, does not necessarily constitute smurfing.
Our goal is to foster fair and good-natured competition, matching all participants in the OWUL with opponents who will challenge them and push them to grow. We ask the community to help us in this mission. Those who cheat are cheating themselves out of the opportunity for improvement, and since we’re not handing out a massive prize pool, those individuals stand to lose every benefit of the OWUL.
