The Season 2 OWUL format introduced two new concepts, one familiar to fans of esports and one less so. At the end of the season, we will be hosting a playoff tournament. There are two ways your team can get into this tournament:
Let’s take a moment to discuss the Medal System--what it is, how it works, and why we’ve implemented it.
Why this change?
Education, competition, community--these are the principles upon which the OWUL was founded. We exist to promote organized team-based Overwatch at all skill levels, not only the semi-pro community found in most leagues. To that end, our goal is to ensure that teams can play as much Overwatch as possible and always have clear objectives they can pursue to improve their own play and their team play.
Last season, we noticed that teams who struggled in their first few matches were often the first to disband. Whether this is correlation or causation, we decided to implement a system that would encourage teams to remain involved and engaged even if they are not dominating the standings of their division. This system not only gives specific goals to complete, it offers an alternate path to the OWUL Playoffs--another opportunity for these teams to play more competitive Overwatch and improve together.
After mentioning this idea to the community and taking their feedback under advisement, we have crafted the medals to reward participation in the community, improvement and innovation in gameplay, and noteworthy accomplishments during league matches. We are confident that pursuing these medals will enhance league play, not detract from it, and encourage teams to grow together.
What are medals?
Medals are achievements that a team can accomplish to earn Medal Points. There are a total of 1000 medal points achievable. A team score of 750 or greater will grant that team access to the Playoff Tournament at the end of the season.
We are still working out the details of the playoff tournament structure, but whether we use a different seeding pattern or separate (lower/upper brackets), teams that are invited to the playoffs on the merits of their division standings (1st or 2nd place) will be favored. Teams that gain access to the playoffs via Medal Score will be able to participate, but will have a lower seed/go into a lower bracket. This is an opportunity for teams that got a late start to claw their way back, or a chance for teams that are having fun and pursuing their goals to get some more competitive competitive experience/a chance to be cast in the Playoffs. We still want to recognize the accomplishments of those teams that just played with excellence during the season, and don’t want to downplay their success.
Without further ado, we offer the current list of Season 2 OWUL Medals. Note the following rules:
